GW PMA Event with Deltek, Recording Available

Thank you to Rick Miller and Kevin Wang of Deltek for their presentation of “Project-Based Analysis – Data Discovery Applied to EVM Metrics” last night. A big thank you to the GW PMA for organizing the event. For those unable to attend, we invite you to listen to the recorded presentation. If the site asks you to log in, enter your NetID and your password (same as log in for Blackboard, email, etc.).

GW has partnered with JourneyEd to offer educational discounts on a variety of software packages. Through JourneyEd, students will receive savings of up to 85% off commercial software list prices. Software available through JourneyEd includes Adobe Acrobat Pro, Rosetta Stone, PhotoShop, SPSS, and more. This is an excellent opportunity to purchase software that is not available through DreamSpark, the Oracle Academy, or through your courses.

Summer Registration Opens Monday, 3 Mar

Registration for the 2014 Summer Sessions will open on Monday, 3 Mar. Students may register for classes on GWeb. All students should consult their plan in DegreeMAP or schedule an advisement session with the program director to confirm summer registrations. Have your plans or ability to attend in the summer changed since your plan in DegreeMAP was developed? If so, your graduation date may be impacted. Schedule an advisement session to discuss your plans.

As a reminder, the last day to withdraw from a course in the spring 2014 semester with a grade of W is Friday, 7 Mar.

GW Commencement Updates

2014 Commencement Countdown: 87 days, 19 hours, 13 minutes

For all details related to GW’s commencement events, visit https://commencement.gwu.edu/. Please note that the School of Business website has not yet been updated with the 2014 commencement schedule and activity details, but will be updated shortly. Included below are recent updates on commencement:

GWSB Specialized Masters Celebration

As previously notified, the GWSB Celebration will follow a different schedule than in 2013. The GWSB Specialized Masters Celebration is scheduled on Saturday, 17 May, at 7:30pm in Lisner Auditorium. A reception will follow in Duques Hall. Students are expected to arrive by 6:30pm to line up for the procession. The ceremony will last approximately 2 hours.

University Commencement – 6 tickets per student

Spring & Summer 2014 Grads – Ticket distribution will occur 24 Apr-7 May on campus. Distance students will pick up their tickets during residency week, 13-16 May.

Fall 2013 Grads – Email gwsbtix@gwu.edu to make arrangements for the School of Business Celebration tickets. University Commencement tickets will be mailed to you by 16 Apr.

GWSB Commencement Gala

The GWSB Commencement Gala is scheduled for Wednesday, 14 May, at the Grand Hyatt Washington. Invitation with additional details to follow.

GWSB Student Speaker/Singer Auditions

One specialized masters student will be selected to speak to their fellow graduates at the 17 May celebration. In addition, one specialized masters student singer will be selected to sing the National Anthem and Alma Mater at the 17 May celebration. Interested parties should email gradspkr@gwu.edu to sign up for an audition time. Be prepared to deliver a 3-5 minute speech or sing the National Anthem. Provide a brief bio and recent photo in the email and submit by 17 Mar.

As information becomes available, we will share with all graduating students, however I encourage each of you to monitor the GW commencement website frequently for updates.

Free Premium Membership with ITMPI

The IT Metrics and Productivity Institute (ITMPI) is extending GW’s MSPM students a free premium membership to their extensive catalog of educational webinars. The membership will entitle each student to unlimited free webinars for a period of one year. Attending the webinars is an effective means of earning Professional Development Units (PDUs) and for staying abreast of current developments in the field project management. Each student will receive a letter via mail with the membership details in the next two weeks.

Attend their 11 Mar webinar on “Establishing an Enterprise Architecture Practice” with Chris Armstrong. This webinar will discuss how to establish an effective and sustainable enterprise architecture (EA) practice based on four fundamental elements: a method framework, a skills framework, a taxonomy framework, and a tool framework. Register to attend this event following receipt of the letter with your membership information.

PMIWDC Washington Circle Luncheon, 26 Feb

Attend the 26 Feb Washington Circle Luncheon and learn from Michael Dobson, PMP  on “How to Manage an Impossible Project.” The event is free to attend, however registration is requested. Bring your lunch and earn 1 PDU. The event is open to all interested parties. Visit PMIWDC’s website for full details and to register.

The Washington Circle Luncheon is a monthly event made possible by the generous support of the GW Master of Science in Project Management degree program. The event is held on the fourth Wednesday of the month with the presentation beginning at 12pm EST in Duques Hall, room 453.

2014 GWSB Graduate Speaker and Singer Competition – 17 Mar Deadline

The Office of Graduate Student Assistantships and Fellowships offers a variety of fellowships and scholarships to GW graduate students. Some are even specific to GW School of Business students. Review the list available online, taking particular note of the following:

Please also notify the MSPM program regarding your application so that we can provide any required recommendations or confirmation of your enrollment in the program. Don’t leave money sitting on the table, apply for all fellowships and scholarships that you are eligible for!

Summer 2014 Short-term Study Abroad

The deadline to apply for the summer 2014 short-term study abroad programs is 2 Mar. A variety of programs are being offered, with the following of particular note to those in the MSPM program:

  • United Kingdom – Business and the State: Privatization & Public-Private Partnerships
  • France – Strategic Management in the EU
  • Brazil – Impacts of the 2014 FIFA World Cup – 21 Feb Application Deadline

Remember, short-term study abroad program courses must be approved by the MSPM director prior to application and enrollment. Schedule an advisement session with me to discuss the application of these courses to your degree requirements.

Important Registration Deadlines

Friday, 7 Feb, is the last day to add a course to your spring 2014 schedule. It is also the last day to drop a course without academic penalty. Submit a Registration Transaction Form to take either action. Consult the Office of the Registrar site for details on the refund schedule.

Friday, 7 Mar, is the last day to withdraw from a course with a grade of ‘W’ using a Registration Transaction Form.  Financial penalties will apply.

Registration for the summer 2014 term will open for all students on Monday, 3 Mar. Registration for the fall 2014 will open Thursday, 20 Mar. Schedule an advisement session with me via www.meetme.so/gwmspm to confirm your plans for the summer and fall terms.

Summer 2014 MSPM Elective – Project Governance

In addition to several core classes, we will offer a 1.5 credit elective during summer session I – DNSC 6290 Project Governance (19 May-28 Jun). The course, taught by Dr. Sam Ghosh, is 6 weeks in length and will cover models, practices, and case studies for project governance. An executive summary of the elective is available on www.gwprojectmanagement.org. This class will also be open to non-MSPM students. If you are interested in the course, register within the first week of summer registration to ensure a seat.

GW Summer English for Academic Purposes

International students looking to strengthen their academic writing, research, and communication skills are invited to enroll in summer English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses. This program is open to incoming students, as well as current international students. Class sessions are scheduled 7 Jul through 15 Aug and are on campus in Washington, DC.

Please note that these courses/credits do not count toward your MSPM degree requirements. Tuition and fees will apply; $4,200 for one 3-credit EAP course. Participants in the courses will include those who scored above and below the TOEFL requirements.
