Welcome back! And a special welcome to the 50+ new students beginning this fall! I hope that everyone had a great summer and that you are ready to start the fall semester. Looking for a refresher on your fellow MSPM classmates? Visit the bio books under the Resources tab of www.gwprojectmanagement.org, connect via Blackboard once the professors activate the classes (may not be until 1st day of class), or locate your classmates using the directory on my.gwu.edu.

Fall 2013 Registration Schedule

Classes begin the week of August 26, 2013. Register via the GWeb Info Systems site through August 25 to avoid late registration fees. Late registration fees ($80) go into effect August 26. September 20 is the last day to drop a course without academic penalty, however you should be aware of the refund schedule. Courses dropped beginning the first day of classes are subject to the university refund schedule.

Fall 2013 MSPM Scholarship Recipient

Thank you to everyone who applied for the scholarships available to current MSPM students in the fall semester. We received a large number of applications, however we were only able to issue one award for each scholarship. Congratulations to John Tapia, PMP, who received the MSPM Scholarship worth $4,000. John is a project manager on the MaRIE Project at Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

PMA/PMAA Speed Networking Event a Success!

The GW Project Management Association (PMA) along with the Project Management Alumni Association (PMAA) hosted an amazing Speed Networking event at the School of Business on Thursday, April 11. Alumni represented many different organizations including:

  • Micron Technology, Inc.
  • Clavis
  • Internal Revenue Service
  • Homeland Security
  • Visionary Integration Professionals
  • eGlobalTech
  • Hewlett-Packard Consulting
  • Project Management Institute

The event opened with a welcome by PMAA Vice President Sara Alsaffar and followed by the PMA President, Anna Matsiras, who summarized the events that the PMA had hosted this year.

Then we got down to business. The 30 participants were assigned to tables and the banter began. With some light nudging the conversation began with drafted questions from both the PMA and PMAA. The interactions quickly developed into full fledged conversations. Conversation topics included PMP certification, GW’s integration and accreditation by PMI, industry acceptance of project management as a profession, planning course loads, graduation plans, perceptions of courses and the ever elusive jobs, jobs, jobs!

Everyone had a great time and met new classmates and made strong connections with our alumni community. Again, we want to thank the PMAA for their participation and their co-sponsorship of the event with the MSPM program! Thank you to everyone who came out, and if you missed it, please keep an eye out for notification of the next event on May 10th. We will try to squeeze in a happy hour before semester’s end, too!

Alumni Speaker Series – Jeff Colclough

Title: Alumni Speaker Series – Jeff Colclough
Location: Duques Hall, 651 and 6th Fl Lobby
Description: Jeff Colclough, PMP, is the Vice President of the National Security Sector of SAIC. He received his MS in 2001 from the MIS Executive Program and currently sits on the F. David Fowler Career Center’s Corporate Collaborative Council. Jeff not only lives project management every day at SAIC, but also teaches it to SAIC employees. He will speak on “My Top Ten Lessons Learned: Key Activities Every Successful PM Should Implement Now!”  The event is free, however registration is required.
