Town Hall with Dean Livingstone, 27 Jan
Dean Linda Livingstone will host a town hall on Wednesday, 27 Jan, 6-7 p.m. EST in Duques Hall 353. The town hall is an opportunity to provide feedback on the specialized masters programs, the School of Business, and your experience directly to Dean Livingstone. We hope that you can attend.
A separate session will be scheduled for online students. A date and time will be scheduled in the coming weeks.

Internship at Causal Links
An internship ideal for an MSPM student is available on GWorkSB, GW Position ID 822785. Massoud Moussavi at Causal Links is seeking an intern for 10-20 hours per week over the summer. Massoud reached out to the MSPM program specifically for the position. The position may continue into the fall. International students may apply. Seeking individual(s) with skills/interests in business development, communication, administrative issues, and/or programming.

GW Commencement Updates

2014 Commencement Countdown: 87 days, 19 hours, 13 minutes

For all details related to GW’s commencement events, visit https://commencement.gwu.edu/. Please note that the School of Business website has not yet been updated with the 2014 commencement schedule and activity details, but will be updated shortly. Included below are recent updates on commencement:

GWSB Specialized Masters Celebration

As previously notified, the GWSB Celebration will follow a different schedule than in 2013. The GWSB Specialized Masters Celebration is scheduled on Saturday, 17 May, at 7:30pm in Lisner Auditorium. A reception will follow in Duques Hall. Students are expected to arrive by 6:30pm to line up for the procession. The ceremony will last approximately 2 hours.

GWSB Specialized Masters Celebration – 4 tickets per student

University Commencement – 6 tickets per student

Spring & Summer 2014 Grads – Ticket distribution will occur 24 Apr-7 May on campus. Distance students will pick up their tickets during residency week, 13-16 May.

Fall 2013 Grads – Email gwsbtix@gwu.edu to make arrangements for the School of Business Celebration tickets. University Commencement tickets will be mailed to you by 16 Apr.

GWSB Commencement Gala

The GWSB Commencement Gala is scheduled for Wednesday, 14 May, at the Grand Hyatt Washington. Invitation with additional details to follow.

GWSB Student Speaker/Singer Auditions

One specialized masters student will be selected to speak to their fellow graduates at the 17 May celebration. In addition, one specialized masters student singer will be selected to sing the National Anthem and Alma Mater at the 17 May celebration. Interested parties should email gradspkr@gwu.edu to sign up for an audition time. Be prepared to deliver a 3-5 minute speech or sing the National Anthem. Provide a brief bio and recent photo in the email and submit by 17 Mar.

As information becomes available, we will share with all graduating students, however I encourage each of you to monitor the GW commencement website frequently for updates.

Free Premium Membership with ITMPI

The IT Metrics and Productivity Institute (ITMPI) is extending GW’s MSPM students a free premium membership to their extensive catalog of educational webinars. The membership will entitle each student to unlimited free webinars for a period of one year. Attending the webinars is an effective means of earning Professional Development Units (PDUs) and for staying abreast of current developments in the field project management. Each student will receive a letter via mail with the membership details in the next two weeks.

Attend their 11 Mar webinar on “Establishing an Enterprise Architecture Practice” with Chris Armstrong. This webinar will discuss how to establish an effective and sustainable enterprise architecture (EA) practice based on four fundamental elements: a method framework, a skills framework, a taxonomy framework, and a tool framework. Register to attend this event following receipt of the letter with your membership information.

PMIWDC Washington Circle Luncheon, 26 Feb

Attend the 26 Feb Washington Circle Luncheon and learn from Michael Dobson, PMP  on “How to Manage an Impossible Project.” The event is free to attend, however registration is requested. Bring your lunch and earn 1 PDU. The event is open to all interested parties. Visit PMIWDC’s website for full details and to register.

The Washington Circle Luncheon is a monthly event made possible by the generous support of the GW Master of Science in Project Management degree program. The event is held on the fourth Wednesday of the month with the presentation beginning at 12pm EST in Duques Hall, room 453.

I am excited to welcome everyone back to school this week. I encourage everyone to reacquaint themselves with their classmates, professors, and the academic technology for the program. A plethora of resources and information are available to you at my.gwu.edu, the Office of the Registrar website, and www.gwprojectmanagement.org.

Welcome to the Spring 2014 Class

Please join me in welcoming the spring 2014 incoming class of MSPM students. The diverse class of students hail from across the globe, including Azerbaijan, Ghana, and Saudi Arabia. The domestic students hail from DC to Los Angeles. The bio book for the new class will be posted shortly onto www.gwprojectmanagement.org.

All new spring 2014 students now have access to DreamSpark to download Microsoft software, excluding Office. Read the instructions on registering with DreamSpark and downloading the software prior to contacting the MSPM office with questions. When registering on the DreamSpark site, be sure to use your @gwmail.gwu.edu email address.

Information on downloading VM Fusion is also available on www.gwprojectmanagement.org, see the Resources tab.

Summer 2014 Short-term Study Abroad Options

We are excited to see four MSPM enrolled in the TSTD 6282 Russia: Behind the Scenes at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games program. Are you interested in taking advantage of a similar short-term study abroad program in the summer 2014 term? Review the list of available programs through the GWSB Global & Experiential Education office’s website and pay special attention to the application deadlines. Some program deadlines are today, 15 Jan.

Remember, short-term study abroad program courses must be approved by the MSPM director prior to enrollment. Schedule an advisement session with me to discuss the application of a study-abroad program for fulfillment of your elective requirements.

Congratulations to Fiona Saunders, Christle Scholarship Recipient

Congratulations to MSPM student Fiona Saunders on receiving the Gaylord E. (Gary) Christle Scholarship in 2013. The $3,000 scholarship is provided through the Project Management Institute Educational Foundation in honor of the distinguished government service career of a founding member of the Performance Management Association, now known as the Former PMI College of Performance Management. The scholarship is designed to support scholarly studies and scientific advancement in the fields of acquisition, program and project management. Well done Fiona!

Last Day to Withdraw from Classes, 18 Oct

Friday, October 18 is the last day to withdraw from a course with a grade of “W” using a Registration Transaction Form. Be mindful of the refund schedule if you must withdraw from a course. In addition, you should also schedule an advisement session with me to discuss the impact of your withdrawal from one or more of your courses.
