MSPM in the KNOW: February 28, 2017

1- Registration for Summer 2017 begins tomorrow!  Reminder, registration for the 2017 Summer Sessions will open tomorrow, Wednesday, 1 March. Continuing students with no holds on their record may register for classes on GWeb. The following MSPM courses are offered: 

DNSC 6237: International Project Management, Prof. Ghosh (Campus and DE)

DNSC 6238: Project Management and Organizational Context, Prof. Keleher (DE)

Courses offered by the Department of Decision Sciences that will count toward your elective requirement are posted on the blog. You may also view full list of course offerings via the registrar’s website.

2- Summer 2017 STAP application deadline extended! Application for 2017 Short-Term Study Away Programs (STAP) has been extended through 12 March. The following programs are still accepting applications:

Austria: Dealmaking for Social Impact: Consulting for GlaxoSmithKline

California: A Journey Through the Sharing Economy, Customer Experience Fieldwork in San Francisco

Cuba: Celebrating Cuban Heritage and Fostering Tourism in Havana

Sweden: Healthcare and Marketing Strategy

United Kingdom: Business and the State: Privatization and Public Private Partnerships

3- GW University PM Talks organized by the GWPMA (MSPM student association) in coordination with the PMIWDC, sold out! Thank you to those who registered. Event is tomorrow, 1 March 2017, featuring MSPM alumna Natalya Bah, CEO (Natalya Bah Consulting); Alan Zucker, PM Director (Fannie Mae); and Dr. Alan Zeitoun, President (PM Solutions).   

Launched in November 2016, the University PM Talks is an expansion of PMIWDC programming and is supported by both the GWMSPM and GWPMA. The goal is to bring chapter events to the students and young professionals in the DC area on a quarterly basis. Event is free to MSPM students and offers “PM TED talks” style: short, thought provoking topics in all areas of the new talent triangle (Leadership, Technical Project Management and Strategic and Business Management). GWU is the first to host this type of event.

1- Lecture Capture Service. A new lecture capture system is installed in Duques rooms where MSPM lectures are taught (254, 255 and 258). The new system is being managed by our local GWSB IT team. Problems downloading or viewing lectures online? E-mail oitshelp@gwu.edu.

2-Fall Registration. As a reminder, the last day to add a course via GWeb is Sunday, 11 September at 10pm. If you plan to add a course, make the decision early to avoid missed lectures and/or assignments. Sunday, 25 September at 10pm is the last day to drop classes online for the fall semester. After this date students will receive a notation of ‘W’ on their transcripts. Review withdrawals and refund information via the registrar’s website prior to dropping.

3-Short Term Study Away Programs (STAP). The GWSB Global & Experiential Education team has announced the winter/spring break program offerings. The courses qualify as general electives for the MSPM degree. Hear from faculty who will be leading programs, and meet students who have previously participated in these programs at this session.  Come to the Short-term Study Away Information Session hosted by the GWUSB Global and Experiential Education team:

1- Fall 2016 Courses Update: Both the on campus and distance sections of DNSC 6269, Project Management Application (Capstone), with Prof. Kwak  and the DNSC 6290 Project Management and Organizational Context (elective) with Dr. Keleher were cancelled for Fall 2016. Email aesocrates@gwu.edu with any questions or concerns if you are enrolled in these courses for Fall 2016.  You may also schedule an advisement session  via www.meetme.so/gwmspm and include your GWid.

2- PMP Prep Course in the Fall: As previously announced, the GWPMA is partnering with PMIWDC to put together a PMP Prep Course. The boot camp will be held on 29-30 October; and 5-6 November.  The course is discounted at $625 (regularly $995) provided there is at least 20 participants enrolled. Sign up now! Religious Observances and Holidays

GW’s policy regarding accommodations for religious holidays may be found on the Office of the Provost website. This is a reminder that students must notify faculty during the first week of the semester of their intention to be absent from class on their day(s) of religious observance. The spring semester begins the week of January 13, 2014.

Spring 2014 Scholarships, 16 Dec Deadline

This will serve as the final reminder to apply for the scholarships available to current MSPM students in the spring 2014 semester. The program will award a total of four scholarships, each in the amount of $3,596.25. Applications are due on or before 11:59pm EST Monday, December 16, 2013. Full details and the scholarship applications are available on www.gwprojectmanagement.org.

Summer Short-Term Study Abroad Programs

Interested in studying abroad during the summer 2014 term? The listing of short-term study abroad programs has been released by the GWSB Global & Experiential Education team. Of particular note for MSPM students are two programs:

The study abroad programs offer a unique opportunity to fulfill your general elective requirement for the MSPM program. Short-term study abroad program courses must be approved by the MSPM director prior to enrollment. Schedule an advisement session with me to discuss in further detail. Spring 2014 Scholarships, 16 Dec Deadline

Scholarship funding has been made available to current MSPM students in the spring 2014 semester. We will award a total of four scholarships, each in the amount of $3,596.25. Full details of each scholarship, the eligibility criteria, and the applications are available on www.gwprojectmanagement.org. Applications must be submitted on or before 11:59pm EST December 16, 2013; we will not accept late applications.

Fall 2013 Course Feedback Surveys

As we near the end of the fall 2013 semester, the professors will begin to discuss the feedback surveys. We encourage all students to provide their open and honest feedback in these surveys so that we can improve the curriculum and faculty for the betterment of the program. The surveys are completely anonymous and will have no effect on your final grade in the course. Review the schedule for the survey release so that you may provide your feedback within the 5 day window.

Winter 2014 Short-Term Study Abroad Program Deadline, 4 Oct

Interested in studying abroad during the winter 2014 break? The GW School of Business is offering several courses, one of which may be of particular interest to MSPM students. Professor Lisa Delpy Neirotti is leading a group to Sochi, Russia, host of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, February 7-17, 2014. The course will also include 3 on campus sessions in December and January. TSTD 6282 Russia: Behind the Scenes at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games will study how such a major event is organized. As you all are aware, project management is essential to such an event.

The study abroad programs offer a unique opportunity to complete the general elective requirements for the MSPM program. Short-term study abroad program courses must be approved by the MSPM director prior to enrollment. Schedule an advisement session with me to discuss in further detail. October 4 is the deadline to apply for the program. The Global & Experiential Education office is also available to answer questions as the program is administered through their office. Teaching Award Nominations, The Teaching & Learning Collaborative

Is there a professor or GTA that has made a lasting impact on you as a student? If so, the Teaching & Learning Collaborate is accepting nominations for the Trachtenberg Prize for Teaching Excellence, the Bender Teaching Award, and the Philip J. Amsterdam Graduate Teaching Award. Nominations for all awards must be submitted via the TLC website between October 4 and November 29. Supporting materials for nominated faculty and GTAs should then be submitted to the TLC by January 17.

GW PMA Speaker Series, Jeff Toppall, 10 Oct

The GW Project Management Association (PMA) Speaker Series features project management experts and practitioners who share lessons learned from their successes and failures. The GW PMA is proud to host Jeff Toppall, PMP who will present on how critical project management skills can be learned and applied outside of your professional work environment. The event is scheduled for Thursday, October 10, 5:45-6:45pm, and will be held in Duques Hall room 453. Register in advance to attend, attendance is free and open to the GW community.
